Introduction

Traditional wireless deployments are often complex, time-consuming, and error-prone. Between controller setup, manual configurations, and site-by-site changes, it’s easy for small mistakes to snowball into performance and reliability issues.

Aruba Central changes that with a modern, cloud-managed approach. Instead of managing individual controllers and appliances, you manage your entire wireless network from a single, cloud-hosted dashboard. This series will walk you step by step from zero to a fully functional, production-ready Aruba Central wireless deployment.

What Is Aruba Central?

Aruba Central is a cloud-native network management platform for Aruba access points, switches, and gateways. It gives you a single pane of glass to design, deploy, and operate your wired and wireless networks from anywhere.

With Aruba Central, you can:

  • Onboard and configure access points and gateways with or without on-site controllers
  • Monitor performance, client health, and RF conditions in real time
  • Apply consistent configurations across sites, groups, and device types
  • Leverage AI-powered insights and recommendations for optimization and troubleshooting
  • Scale from a single site to thousands of locations with centralized control

In Aruba Central, traditional controllers are replaced by gateways. When you migrate from an on-prem controller architecture, you can upgrade your controllers to gateways and manage them from the cloud. Many customers still prefer gateways because they enable tunneled WLANs: you can tunnel traffic from the access points back to the gateways without extending every SSID VLAN across your switching infrastructure. This simplifies your Layer 2 design and reduces the need to create multiple VLANs on every access switch.

Compared to traditional on-premises controllers, Aruba Central removes the need to manage controller hardware, software upgrades, and complex HA designs. Configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting all live in the cloud, which speeds up deployments and reduces operational overhead—whether you are using pure Instant APs, gateways, or a mix of both.

Who This Series Is For

This 8-part series is designed for:

  • Network administrators who are new to Aruba wireless
  • IT teams transitioning from controller-based architectures to cloud-managed networks
  • Anyone planning their first Aruba Central wireless deployment

You should be comfortable with basic networking concepts such as VLANs, DHCP, IP subnets, and default gateways. You don’t need prior Aruba experience—this series will cover the Aruba-specific details as we go.

The Complete Deployment Journey (High-Level Overview)

Over the next eight weeks, we’ll follow a structured path from foundational setup to final validation:

  • Foundation (Weeks 2–3): Create your HPE GreenLake account, onboard devices (APs and gateways) into Aruba Central, and apply the right licenses.
  • Organization (Week 4): Structure your environment with groups and sites so that configuration is consistent and manageable.
  • Infrastructure (Weeks 5–6): Provision access points, tune radio settings, and build a solid RF foundation. If you are using gateways, we’ll also touch on how tunneled WLANs fit into the design.
  • Services (Week 7): Create SSIDs, configure authentication and encryption, and define how users access the network.
  • Validation (Week 8): Test coverage, performance, and roaming; validate configurations; and prepare to go live.

Each post will include conceptual explanations plus hands-on steps so you can follow along in a lab or production environment.

Prerequisites and Requirements

To get the most out of this series, you should have access to the following (or a close equivalent):

  • Hardware: Aruba Instant access points (for example, AP-515, AP-635) or campus APs managed by Aruba Central, and optionally Aruba gateways if you plan to use tunneled WLANs.
  • Network: Internet connectivity for Central access, a working DHCP server to hand out IP addresses, and DNS resolution so devices and clients can reach the required services.
  • Accounts: An email address you can use for HPE GreenLake registration.
  • Subscription keys: Purchased or trial Aruba Central licenses for your devices.
  • Optional: Test client devices such as a laptop and smartphone so you can validate connectivity and user experience.

What You'll Build

By the end of this series, you will have built:

  • A secure corporate WLAN using WPA2 and/or WPA3 authentication
  • Proper VLAN segmentation between corporate users and any other traffic you define, with the option to use tunneled WLANs via gateways to simplify your access-layer VLAN design
  • RF optimization tuned for coverage, capacity, and performance
  • Monitoring and troubleshooting workflows using Aruba Central's dashboards and tools
